| The 30 Dorado nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is the greatest starburst
region in our Local Group of galaxies. The energy input in forms of ionization radiation,
fast stellar winds, and supernova explosions, heats and shapes the interstellar medium in
a profound way. The red color in the picture represents a very deep ROSAT HRI image of
X-ray emission, primarily from hot gas of million degrees or so; the green represents
optical hydrogen line emission from photoionized gas; and the blue represents UV radiation
from massive stars. This composite image shows vividly the interplay between these
components. |
