Topics in Astrophysics: High Energy Astrophysics

Devoted each year to a particular topic or current research interest. This course will give an introduction to high energy astrophysics -- a field that deals with the most energetic phenomena and processes in the universe, such as supernova explosions, cosmic rays, compact stars, active galactic nuclei, and the hot interstellar/intergalactic media. In addition to the study of relevant astrophysical processes, students will also learn about some of the telescope and detector designs, data analysis techniques, statistics, and multi-messager astronomy. Students will assess online astronomical databases, analyze data, perform statistical analysis, and interpret results. They will be actively involved in presentations/discussions and will have written assignments, as well as homework. F2020:

Prerequisites: 

At least three semesters of physics, astronomy, or geology. Juniors and seniors only, or per instructors permission.
