The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996: Genna Davis,
Samual L. Jackson) video Karmit
Jackson makes this
movie with his the potrayal of his street smart, still largely in the 70's
dectective. The movie is also pretty good, to near the end with Davis's
assaisin turned homemaker charachter. It does a decent job with the
surpression of her real identity and her rediscovery of herself. The
end of the movie looses it all by going on and on with death defying scenes
and a nonsense plot that has nothing to do with the rest of the movie.
Aside from that a fun action movie.

Woman on Top (1999: Isabella Oliveira)
cinemateque
This is a fairy tale
about a Brazillian woman who leaves her cheating husband, makes it big in
San Francisco, while her husband follows her to woo her back. The film
is full of magic, the magic of cooking, the magic of love and the magic of
Isabella who is beautiful and it is very easy to believe the power she has
over men. The movie has great Latin beats, is well written and a nice
potrayal of how one can see the world as full of magic. A good movie.

Pat Garret and Billy the Kid (1973: Bob
Dylan) cinemateque
I went to see this
flick just to see Dylan and because he did the sound track; however, I was
surprised with how good of a cowboy movie it is. The charachter of
Pat Garret is excellent and Billy ended up growing on me as the film progressed.
It is a classic cowboy movie, but the feeling of freedom and individual
that is the romance of that period is as well felt as in the best of the
genre. Really and excellent film with Dylans charachter and music
adding and not detracting from it.

The Ice Storm (1997: Kevin Kline,
Christina Ricci, Sigourney Weaver) cinemateque
Taking place in 1973
like American Beauty this film exposes the troubled lives of outwordly perfectly
normal suburbian American family life. The solution to the problem
raised by these films, seems to me, to be more aware of oneself. It
seems like the suburbia problem comes about because people follow what they
are told, or what appears to fufill them, and then get completely stuck
in it. It is a problem of inertia, people unwilling to do anything
to change their situation, because they are not entirely aware that they
are unhappy and they don't see how things could be better. This leads
to hopelessness which is the most defeating of feeling. To overcome
the problem one must question; question what is important, what has to be
the way it is and what can change, what one wants, and who one is.
Then take action to change things, and remake the world in away that is pleasing,
instead of begin trapped in a world not of ones making or wanting.

An interesting film,
rather like a play since the focus is on the interactions between the characters.

Pain is... (1997) cinemateque
This is an interesting
attempt to due a documentary on the nature of pain. It moves from
those who suffer chronic pain, do those looking for pain as a form on enjoyment
either sexually or religously and then to those who suffer pain but show
no physical reason for it. The premise of the movie is that pain inexplicable,
which certainly has some truth to it, however, I feel it also makes the
director not really try to understand nor convey to the audience understanding.
I think the film would have been better if it really tried to understand
pain from the begining and failed at the end, instead of just presenting
it as a undefinable experience, which for the viewer translates watching
the film as an undefined expereince.
