The Astronomy Program at the University of Massachusetts
specializes in computational astrophysics and observational work in millimeter wavelength radio astronomy and instrumentation,
infrared, x-ray, and extragalactic astronomy.
Among its new facilities, the program is currently building (near Mexico City)
the LMT (large millimeter telescope)
in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Mexico.
Amherst offers a variety of outdoor activities ranging from kayaking to skiing. It is approximately 2 hours from Boston and 3 hours from New York City.    The University of Massachusetts Astronomy Department belongs to the Five College astronomy Program, along with the four small, liberal arts colleges, Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith. Upper level undergraduate astronomy courses are taught within a common program, thereby reducing duplication of effort and at the same time creating a more diverse educational environment. |
