BOLOCAM IIBOLOCAM II is a bolometer-based, mm-wave, array receiver currently under construction at UMass for eventual use on the Large Millimeter Telescope. The instrument is closely based on the design of the original BOLOCAM receiver and is being built in close collaboration with the original BOLOCAM team. BOLOCAM II will offer unprecedented imaging ability at 2.1 and 1.1mm from the LMT. See the LMT science justification for an overview of the scientific potential of LMT/BCII. INSTRUMENT OVERVIEW
The BOLOCAM II photometer will have 144 spiderweb bolometers arranged in a hexagonal array. The bolometers are read out by a newly designed set of readout electronics which digitize the detector signal at the cryostat. All signals are sent via fiber-optic connection to a back-end receiver card and computer. The cryostat is a custom designed Precision Cryogenics LN2/LHe dewar. The LN2 hold time is approximately 10 days. The LHe hold time is 6 days (unloaded) and is expected to be > 3 days (loaded). Click on the following links to learn more about the cold electronics and expected performance. For further information on BOLOCAM II, contact Grant Wilson or Jay Austermann. |
