EXTRA CREDIT #1 -- YOUR OWN CONSTELLATION -- Due Mon. Oct. 21, 2002
In this assignment, you will make up your own story about a group of stars in the sky, your own constellation. This will be your own creative story about these stars and the significance of their grouping in the sky, not the traditional Greek mythology. Also, it will be your own idea of which stars go together, not one of the traditional constellations.
To complete this assignment, you will need to do 3 things:
Each of the above parts will be graded separately, and all 3 need to be included in the completed assignment. The 2-3 page star story should be typed, double spaced, and will be graded on originality, creativity, grammar, spelling, and neatness. The creative drawing should be in color on unlined paper, and will be graded on creativity, neatness, effort, and artistry. Lastly, to show your group of stars in a familiar way, trace by hand or xerox (from the star charts) the area in the sky where your constellation is located, and indicate on this drawing the stars which are in your group, along with your name for this constellation. Keep in mind that the stars which are most easily visible in the sky are the bright ones, so if you want to truly find your constellation in the sky, it should be made up mostly of the brighter stars. [If you do not have access to your own xerox machine, at Collective Copies in downtown Amherst, you may make a xerox of a single page free of charge.]
The completed assignment is due by 5:00 p.m. on Monday Oct. 21, 2002.
EXTRA CREDIT #2 -- THE SUN -- Due Wed. Nov. 27, 2002
The purpose of this assignment is to learn about the various features seen on the Sun. For the information you need, you should read and refer to Ch. 11 of your textbook. In order to receive any extra credit, you must follow all of the instructions below.
The following is a list of many of the features of the Sun:
This assignment is to be done by hand -- no xeroxes or computer drawings will be accepted. The assignment is to draw a diagram of the Sun in color on a piece of construction paper or drawing paper (unlined only). In your drawing, you should illustrate and include examples of all 10 of the features listed above, and mark on your drawing an example of each of the above features with its name. Feel free to be as artistic as you like. Drawings will be graded for neatness, completeness, accuracy, legibility, and creativity.
In addition to your drawing of the Sun with labeled features, you should include a write-up on a separate sheet of paper. In this write-up, you should write (by hand) in your own words a minimum of 2-3 complete sentences to define and describe each of the above features. Make sure to include such things as the temperature, the density, the size, or the location of each feature in the Sun. No credit will be given for sentences which are copied from the glossary. The key should be written on lined paper, but should not be lined paper torn out of a notebook. The KEY will be graded on accuracy, completeness, legibility, and neatness.
To receive extra credit for this assignment, it should be handed in no later than Wednesday Nov. 27 at 3:00 p.m.
