All are invited to observe sunrise and sunset on the day of the winter solstice among the standing stones of the UMass Amherst Sunwheel this Saturday, Dec. 21, at 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Heavy rain or snow will cancel the gatherings. Professor Steve Schneider will discuss the astronomical cause of the solstice at two one-hour-long gatherings: 7-8am and 3:30-4:30pm. Weather permitting, you will be able to use a telescope to safely observe the the waning crescent moon in the morning, and the setting sun in the evening. The sunwheel is south of the McGuirk Alumni Stadium, just off of Rocky Hill Road (Amity St.) about 1/4 mile west of University Drive. Please be prepared for freezing temperatures and wet footing.
